“I’ve always marched to the beat of my own drummer,” says Nicole Lebreux, the creative force behind the environmentally-conscious and ethically-made Nicole Lebreux Original Apparel. Before starting her own line, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, worked in fashion in New York, owned a vintage shop in Newport and went out traveling the world. “It was my education and time spent traveling abroad that really gave me my focus,” Nicole explains. “I learned so much about the poor labor practices that go into mass produced fashion. I decided to create something that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also ethically different.” Her clothing repurposes vintage items, uses environmentally conscious fabric and is made locally. Of her Spring/Summer 2013 line, Nicole says: “True to form, my collection stems from the ideas of comfort and confidence. But for this spring, I am playing with the idea of restrictions, or lack thereof, in my garments.” Her signature staples, like leggings, retro-inspired swimwear and wrap dresses and skirts will all be present, but with a new emphasis on contrasting fabric and color choices. Look for neon and pastel combinations, and leotards topped with sheer fabrics. Nicole Lebreux Original Apparel is available at boutiques on the East and West Coasts, regional artisan fairs and her Etsy shop. Nicole Lebreux will be presenting at 9pm on Tuesday, August 28 at the Providence Biltmore.
