The Spring Event from the Mile of History Association – an annual happening for members and friends to gather and learn about some part of the Mile – will be held on the front lawn of the historic Old State House, 150 Benefit Street, in June, date TBA. At the completion of a lengthy restoration project, the Old State House threw open its doors for visitors on May 4. Largely completed in 1762, it was the meeting place for the colonial and state legislatures for 149 years. It was here on May 4, 1776, when the General Assembly declared its independence, renouncing its allegiance to the British crown, a date now celebrated as Rhode Island Independence Day. Food and drink will be served, and we welcome all who are interested in Providence’s Mile of History. –Submitted by Charles W. Hewitt
