Experience: Rollers Sports Bar & Grill in Providence

An inventive menu of stadium food, craft cocktails, and home-team pride gives Aborn Street a new place to catch the action

There’s a particular kind of debate that happens when one person wants to watch the game and someone else would rather not choose between nachos and nachos with extra cheese. Rollers Sports Bar & Grill lands somewhere comfortably in the middle, with plenty to watch overhead and an inventive menu of stadium food and craft cocktails that gives the table its own agenda.

A few blocks from the Amica Mutual Pavilion, Rollers feels built for downtown Providence. The room has the easy familiarity of a neighborhood bar, filtered through a ’90s-nostalgic lens with a clean, modern finish. Games play from nearly every angle, but the space feels more lived-in hangout than wall-to-wall sports shrine. On a recent visit, I joined five coworkers from Hey Rhody Media Co.’s art and editorial departments, giving us enough appetites to make a respectable dent in the menu.

Opened in June, Rollers comes from Robert Andreozzi and Jesse Hedberg of Littleneck Hospitality Group, the team behind Pizza Marvin and Club Frills. Even the name carries a little Providence sports lore, nodding to both the Providence Steam Roller football team and the Providence Steamrollers basketball team. That history sets the tone, but the menu takes stadium food well beyond peanuts and pretzels.

We started with hummus, served alongside crisp crudité and pita slices, an easy first plate before things got spicier. The tuna tartare followed with avocado crema, salsa macha, and cilantro; cool tuna and creamy avocado tempered the nutty warmth of the salsa, giving each bite enough heat to keep things interesting without overwhelming the rest.

Then came the grilled wings. Pineapple Papi paired tropical sweetness with Calabrian chile, the heat showing up just after the fruit. Green goddess moved in a more savory direction, with “awesome sauce” and chile crunch adding richness and texture. Both delivered the satisfying mess of a proper wing order, just with a little more imagination behind the sauce.

The sausage fingers may have been the clearest example of Rollers having fun with the stadium-food format. Spicy merguez links arrived with harissa, cabbage, and chermoula yogurt, layering warm spice with cool herbs and a fresh crunch. The name keeps expectations casual, while the flavors make the plate worth slowing down for.

For something more familiar, the Tailgate Burger knew when to keep things simple. Cooper sharp melted over the patty beneath special sauce, onions, and pickles, hitting all the salty, tangy notes a game-day burger should. It was juicy, properly messy, and required no reinvention to earn another bite.

The cocktail list shares the kitchen’s sense of play. I ordered the Juan Deuce, a clarified combination of tequila, vodka, honeydew, raspberry, and sun tea. On paper, it sounds like a lot happening in one glass. In practice, it drank surprisingly light, with soft fruit up front and a clean tea finish that kept the sweeter notes in check.

By the time the plates cleared, Rollers had made its point without straying too far from what makes a sports bar fun in the first place. Burgers and wings still belong here; they just happen to share the table with merguez, salsa macha, Calabrian chile, and cocktails that make ordering another round a little harder to resist.

The game may keep one half of the table looking up, but at Rollers, there’s plenty happening below the screens, too.
