A Providence Tradition
The more things change, the more they stay the same. That adage rings true with the Meeting Street Cafe, a cozy eatery right off of Thayer Street. As the College Hill neighborhood continues to evolve, it’s heartwarming to see this restaurant be just as committed to the quality of food and service today as it did when it first opened 31 years ago. “I love being part of this vibrant community,” says owner David Mcallister. “It’s a great mix of students, professionals, families and visitors. And they all love to eat great food.”
Indeed, freshly-made food – as well as a massive, mouth-watering selection – is what drives both returning customers and new ones here. Let’s start with the first meal of the day, which is actually served all day and night. Made-to-order breakfast offerings include specialty egg sandwiches, omelets stuffed with local vegetables and stacks of fluffy pancakes and French toast. “We’re really known for our breakfast,” David says. “Customers love the variety and also the ability to order it all day and night.” Come lunch and dinner, the cafe has a staggering variety of options. Sandwiches get the gourmet treatment here, with selections including turkey, roast beef, tuna and fish. Specialty entrees – all made daily from the scratch kitchen – include comfort food favorites like hand-rolled meatballs with spaghetti, vegetable lasagna and grilled chicken fajitas. Hearty salads and homemade soups round out the never-ending selection. And if you’re craving something sweet, be sure to check out their cakes, pies and award-winning cookies, which are colossal in size and in taste.
