Supported by RISD and Achievement First, this special edition of WaterFire layers in community moments, local art, and new traditions for an unforgettable night downtown.

By the time the fires are lit, chances are you’ll already have wandered through a market, watched glass take shape, made a wish, and maybe even left a bad vibe behind.

WaterFire’s 500th lighting arrives in Providence on Saturday, May 30, but this year’s event is doing more than marking a number. Supported by the Rhode Island School of Design and with additional support from Achievement First, the first full lighting of the 2026 season turns Waterplace Basin into a celebration of creativity, community, and a distinctly Providence way of gathering.

The evening also coincides with RISD’s Commencement and Reunion Weekend, welcoming graduates, alumni, families, and locals into the heart of downtown.

“Rhode Island School of Design is pleased to sponsor WaterFire’s milestone 500th lighting and the first full lighting of the 2026 season as we welcome our alumni and families to Providence for Commencement and Reunion Weekend,” said Bethany Costello, Executive Director of RISD’s Center for Community Partnerships. “We look forward to joining with the wider Providence community on the riverwalk for this special edition of the signature WaterFire event on May 30.”

Festivities begin at 7pm with artist and maker markets, food vendors, and installations opening across downtown. Achievement First will host an interactive art wall in front of Market House, inviting guests to stop, participate, and create alongside the evening’s programming.

At 8:15pm, visitors are encouraged to gather at Waterplace Basin for a community toast led by Joe Wilson Jr., Director of Art, Culture, and Tourism for the City of Providence, with beverages provided by Polar. Fifteen minutes later, the braziers ignite and remain glowing until midnight.

Throughout the evening, details reward those who linger: live glass blowing and local ice cream on Canal Street, works from WaterFire Accelerate artists Dorian Epps and Janelle Castillo in the Basin Tunnel, and a world premiere from Butch Tavares, whose newest song, Maybe Just For Love, joins the WaterFire soundtrack.

Returning favorites include the Starry, Starry Night installation, the iconic WaterFire phone booth, and the new Burn Your Negativity ceremony at 11pm, where guests can send worries up in sparks over the river.
