WaterFire has illuminated countless summer nights, but this July 4 carries a little extra weight. As Rhode Island joins communities across the country in commemorating America's 250th anniversary, Providence's signature event will take center stage with a full WaterFire lighting, a performance by the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and a day of programming that celebrates the state's history, culture, and community spirit.
Sponsored by the RI250 Commission, the free event begins at 1pm and continues through midnight. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view Rhode Island's three copies of the Declaration of Independence inside the State House, along with exhibits exploring the state's role in the American Revolution.
"Rhode Island played a unique role in the Revolution, and I can think of no better way to commemorate our nation's semiquincentennial anniversary than with the uniquely Rhode Island tradition of WaterFire," said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore, chair of the RI250 Commission.
The celebration extends far beyond the lighting itself. Throughout the afternoon, visitors can take WaterFire's Behind the Magic walking tours, watch World Cup matches at the PVD Fan Zone, and enjoy food vendors, artists, and cultural programming throughout downtown.
Several of Rhode Island's leading arts organizations will also be part of the festivities. Rose Weaver's America in Song: 250 Years of Resilience and Harmony will honor the nation's story through music and storytelling, while Ballet RI will present Ballet Fourth, including the world premiere of 250th Celebration, a new work created specifically for the anniversary.
One of the day's signature moments arrives at 7:15pm, when the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra performs America 250 In Concert on the steps of the Rhode Island State House.
"We are honored to celebrate this historic milestone with the people of Rhode Island," said David Beauchesne, executive director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School. "This concert is an opportunity to bring our community together through music and reflect on the ideals that helped shape our nation."
Following the concert, a ceremonial procession featuring historical militia groups, community leaders, and RI250 Commission members will make its way to Waterplace Basin, where WaterFire's iconic braziers will be lit along the river.
"WaterFire is greatly honored to work with the RI250 Commission to create a special Fourth of July ceremony for the nation's semiquincentennial celebration," said WaterFire Executive Artistic Director Barnaby Evans.
The celebration continues after dark with projected portraits of Rhode Islanders spanning the last 250 years, a community sing-along along the river, live music performances, and favorite WaterFire installations throughout downtown Providence.
