The stories of a culture are often passed down through recipes, shared meals, and the people gathered around the table.

That's what visitors will find at Taste of Juneteenth New England when the annual celebration returns to Providence on June 19. Now in its third year, the free event brings together food, culture, entrepreneurship, and community in honor of Juneteenth, creating a space where Rhode Islanders can experience the diverse culinary traditions of the African Diaspora.

Hosted by The MUSE Foundation of RI and Hope & Main, the festival has become a growing tradition in the Ocean State, welcoming attendees from across the region to celebrate through one of the most universal forms of connection: food.

"We created Taste of Juneteenth to honor this important day while providing real economic opportunity for Black-owned food businesses," says Juan Wilson, founder and executive director of The MUSE Foundation of RI. "It's a chance for our community to come together in joy, reflection, and support."

Throughout the afternoon, visitors can meet local entrepreneurs, support Black artisans, and sample dishes representing cultures and traditions from across New England and beyond. Vendors will serve everything from Haitian-style gluten-free empanadas from Empanada Assassin to Jamaican favorites from D's Kitchen by the Sea and Caribbean Soul, alongside authentic pit-smoked barbecue from Bugg'd Out BBQ and other specialty offerings.

While the menu is a major draw, the event's mission extends beyond what's on the plate. Organizers see Taste of Juneteenth as an opportunity to celebrate culture while creating pathways for Black-owned businesses to grow and thrive.

That mission is reflected in a special spice rub created through a collaboration between The MUSE Foundation of RI and Hope & Main. Proceeds will help support future festivals and opportunities for emerging food entrepreneurs launching from Hope & Main's new West End Kitchens.

Taste of Juneteenth New England takes place Friday, June 19, from 11am-4pm  at Farm Fresh RI in Providence. The celebration continues with a sunset party on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge beginning at 6pm. For more information, event registration, and updates, visit tasteofjuneteenthne.org.
