Statewide Must-Do’s August

August 2022


Through August 28: The Barrington Summer Concert Series continues every Sunday with a lineup of local musicians including Airplay Band, Roger Ceresi's All Starz, Trinity, and Brass Attack performing at Latham Park. 

Through October: Thirteen outdoor public arts installations and experiences are on view across Conanicut Island for the 2022 Jamestown Arts Center's 2022 Biennial: Passages. Events include a family day and a WordChime workshop. Jamestown

August 4: Brush up your penmanship skills with Cocktails & Calligraphy at Reiners in the Providence Graduate. Sip drinks and learn pretty lettering techniques – perfect for giving invitations custom flair. Providence

August 5: Take a musical maritime voyage at Linden Place with A Night of Sea Shanties and Food. Enjoy hot dogs with all the fixings while folk singer David Coffin performs traditional ballads and sailor songs. Bristol

August 5, 12 & 19: Bulgarmarsh Recreation Area is the place to be for free summer fun, with Tiverton’s Concerts in the Park series presenting local bands jamming out in a variety of genres select Fridays, plus food trucks. 

August 5-7: Eat lobster rolls, clam chowder, and more to your stomach’s content at Ninigret Park for the Charlestown Seafood Festival. Stick around for rides, a car show, and a fireworks display on Saturday. 

August 6

Taking its torch from WaterFire, River Glow plants floating bonfires in the Pawcatuck River while belly dancers, fire jugglers, a steel drum band, and other performers keep things lively on land. Westerly

Find energetic crowds and healthy competition on the shore of Jamestown’s town beach for the 43rd Annual Fools’ Rules Regatta, where participants build and sail a boat they make themselves out of non-marine items. Jamestown

Newport Polo invites spectators to watch international teams gallop to victory at Glen Farm every Saturday. The USA vs. New Zealand match is followed by a special Rhode Island Lobster Boil Dinner of local seafood. Portsmouth

InDowncity hosts Open Air Saturday at Grant’s Block, Aborn Street, Union Street, Biltmore Park, and the BankNewport City Center. Enjoy live music performances, a rotating line-up of food trucks, beer gardens, marketplaces, games, and more. Providence

August 8-14: Drive-in, outdoor, or online, the Rhode Island International Film Festival returns with offerings in multiple locations throughout the city. A full roster of activities includes filmmaking workshops, industry events, seminars, and more. Providence

August 9: Local farms team up with top chefs for a live dish preparation event celebrating the Local Food Fest. Enjoy fresh meals along with local wine, beer, signature cocktails, and live music on the water. Newport

The annual Brides on the Beach Flash Mob invites everyone  to come dressed in their wedding gowns, tuxedos, bridesmaids dresses, and other fancy garb to play model on the beach and get some fun photos. Narragansett

August 13: In a full lighting of Providence’s classic WaterFire event, the Starry, Starry Night display returns with 100 blue paper stars and donation lanterns to celebrate Rhode Island’s Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities. Providence

August 14: Four-time Grammy-nominated trombonist William Cepeda performs his blend of progressive jazz with his Afro-Rican Jazz band at the Roger Williams Park Bandstand, part of FirstWorks’ Summer Beats Concert Series. Providence

August 15: Celebrate Korean Independence Day with a free-admission event featuring musicans and dancers from New York and South Korea at PC’s Bishop McVinney Auditorium, plus authentic food. Providence

August 17: Sip drinks and indulge in hors d'oeuvres while enjoying the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Symphony performance at The Sullivan House, benefiting Block Island music programs. New Shoreham

August 17-21: The Washington County Fair – a Southern Rhode Island tradition – returns for its 56th year with midway rides, live music, livestock shows, tractor pulls, and plenty of down-home fun for the whole family. Richmond

August 18: Gather with family and friends at Norman Bird Sanctuary’s Third Beach property for seaside tunes by Greg Ferreira at the Beach Bash. A reservation includes s’mores, soft drinks, and dancing – BYO picnic. Middletown

August 18-21: Experience a celebration of weird fiction and art at NecronomiCon, four days of movie screenings and workshops as well as a Cthulhu Prayer Breakfast, hosted by the Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council. Providence

August 19: More than 40 artists and musicians perform on the sidewalk during Music on Main Stroll, one of four themed summer strolls in East Greenwich, showcasing the coastal town’s arts, eats, and shops. 

August 20: Two stages of concerts featuring local and regional talent, food vendors, and art attract music fans to Warren Folks Fest, The Collaborative’s lively annual fundraiser event, now in its sixth year. Warren

August 24: The state’s Biggest Book Club, presented by Reading With Robin and The Rhode Show, spotlights co-authors Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White and their new novel The Lost Summers of Newport. East Greenwich

August 27

Tour Newport from two wheels with Bike Newport’s 10-Spot Ride, inviting new and experienced cyclists to pedal at their own pace to see 10 scenic private spots (released the day of) and enjoy local food and entertainment. Newport

Brew at the Zoo returns! This outdoor festival boasts 170 beers from 80+ local and national brewers to enjoy alongside animal encounters, all backdropped by live musical entertainment by Niteflies and Farm Dog Band. Providence

What Cheer Flower Farm hosts the 2022 Flower Festival, an all-day outdoor floral-themed event benefiting the Olneyville-based flower charity. Find floral displays, children's activities, themed food and drinks, music, and more. Providence

August 28: Narragansett Bay provides the backdrop for the Rhode Island Folk Festival, featuring three stages with over 50 artists from around the state and beyond, plus vendors and food trucks, at Rose Larisa Park. Riverside 

August 29: Relive your favorite musical moments with Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits, Gerard Alessandrini’s satirical roast of over 30 iconic Broadway shows, complete with outrageous costumes, at Theatre By The Sea. Wakefield
