Thinking & Drinking Educational Series

Sunday, September 22
Cocktail Tasting at The Avery (18 Luongo Sq., Providence)

"Everything you ever wanted to know about mezcal (but were afraid to ask)" featuring Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal:
Participants will be walked through the history of mezcal and tequila. Then, the tasting begins. We'll start with Dublo Tequila as a baseline for a fine example of the style. Then, it's all Mezcal. To be specific, Del Maguey Single Village Mezcals. We'll taste the original four Single Villages.

After tasting the spirits by themselves, we'll then taste two different cocktails to get an idea of how to use mezcal as a mixer. Is that enough for you?

2-4pm. Tickets are $40/person, and seating is limited to 25 people. Click here for tickets.

Monday, September 23
Cocktail Expert Discussion at Vanity (566 South Main St., Providence

Learn about classic cocktails and develop an appreciation for their building blocks. Vanity will demonstrate three of the classics: the Moscow Mule (vodka), the French 75 (gin) and the Manhattan (rye whiskey). Guests will be able to talk with the bartenders about why these recipes stand the test of time, how the formulas can be easily adapted, and how the base spirits contribute to the character of the cocktail. Food pairings will be served.

6-8pm. Admission is $35/person. Call 401-649-4667 or email info@vanityri.com to reserve a spot. Space is limited.

Tuesday, September 24
Cocktail Class at Gracie's (194 Washington St., Providence)

Learn some classic cocktails and the importance of mixology techniques from the experts at Gracie's. You'll have the chance to sample and learn three cocktails -- the Bourbon Smash, the Negroni and Amaretto Sour -- as well as the way methods like stirring, muddling and straining play a role in the development of flavor. Each cocktail will be paired with food, how and why to pair food with cocktails, and how all these elements work together.

Food pairings include pastrami on cornbread with pickled cabbage; honey roasted beets and caraway crisp with citrus-cured salmon; and apricot tart on rye shortbread with toasted almond.

6-8pm. Tickets are $45/person. Call 401-272-7811 or email tenneal@graciesprov.com to reserve your spot. Space is limited.
