Movies on the Block Returns to Downtown Providence for Summer Nights Under the Stars

A beloved outdoor film series brings cult classics, community vibes, and open-air screenings back to Grant’s Block

By the time the sky fades to that soft blue-gray and the first opening credits flicker on screen, downtown Providence starts to feel more like a movie set than a city block. Movies on the Block returns for the 2026 season, inviting locals to settle in for a lineup of nostalgic favorites and those blink-and-you-miss-it summer nights that always seem to go too fast.

Hosted by InDowncity, the outdoor film series takes over Grant’s Block at the corner of Westminster and Union streets once a month from June through September. Screenings begin at dusk, with a lineup that leans equal parts iconic and feel-good. This year’s schedule includes The NeverEnding Story on June 11, Raising Arizona on July 9, Clueless on August 13, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on September 10.

First launched in 2008 as Providence’s original outdoor film series, Movies on the Block has long held a place in the city’s summer rhythm. After a six-year pause, the series returned in 2025 and quickly reclaimed its status as a seasonal staple. “After eighteen years, Movies on the Block remains a favorite event for so many,” says Joanna Levitt, Director of Commercial for Cornish Associates. “We’ve shared many of our favorite films over the years, watching the community gather together to enjoy the event. We’re excited about the 2026 line-up and look forward to welcoming people back to Grant’s Block.”

The setup stays refreshingly simple. No tickets, no reservations, just a first-come, first-served patch of grass and a reminder to bring a blanket or beach chair. Oberlin, located steps from the park, offers a special menu along with cocktails, mocktails, and other beverages, while additional downtown restaurants roll out to-go options designed for easy movie-night snacking.

As the sun sets and the screen lights up, Movies on the Block becomes less about the film itself and more about the shared experience. Neighbors, friends, and visitors settle in together, turning a city block into a summer ritual that feels both easy and memorable.
