Join Bike Newport on June 8 for a Ride Towards a More Inclusive Cycling Community

Bari Freeman, the executive director and founder of Bike Newport, has transformed her personal mission to decrease car usage during Newport's busy summer season into a comprehensive community initiative. With over 25 years of non-profit experience, Freeman utilizes her expertise in collaboration, resource management, and leadership to advocate for cycling in Newport.

"Bike Newport is all about breaking down barriers to biking," says Freeman, emphasizing the organization's dedication to inclusivity. Promoting cycling is at the heart of Elliot's Ride for Everyone, an event honoring Dr. Elliot Kaminitz, a beloved member of the community who was tragically struck by a vehicle and killed while cycling on Memorial Boulevard in 2012. His dream was for everyone to experience the joy of bicycling – a vision that Freeman and Bike Newport are dedicated to realizing through their inclusive cycling advocacy.

Elliot's Ride has evolved from a traditional charity event into a community celebration welcoming cyclists of all skill levels. "We've eliminated fees, introduced protected routes, and continually refined the event," Freeman explains. "It's not just about reaching a destination anymore; it's about enjoying the journey – a 3.5-mile stretch for everyone to relish."

Freeman and her team address the fear that often prevents people from cycling by creating a supportive environment where everyone feels welcome. Bike Newport provides bicycles to those in need, and Freeman highlights the potential of cycling to replace short car trips, noting that 80 percent of car journeys on Aquidneck Island are under four miles.

"During Elliot's Ride, cyclists take over the roads, creating an unforgettable experience," Freeman says. "By joining Elliot's Ride, you're supporting a movement towards a more sustainable, healthy, and connected community." 

Looking ahead, Bike Newport plans to make Newport more bike-friendly by expanding protected bike lanes, enhancing education programs, and building partnerships with local stakeholders. "We're just scratching the surface," Freeman says optimistically. "The potential for positive change is enormous, and with the community's support, we can make Newport a place where cycling is safe and exciting for everyone."
