What happens when contemporary furniture designers rethink a historic house? House Work brings work by RISD Furniture Design students into the historic interiors of Lippitt House Museum, inviting visitors to consider how furniture and domestic spaces reflect the social, cultural, and economic forces of their time.
Drawing on the history of Lippitt House and 19th-century Providence, the students’ work explores themes of class, gender, labor, technology, and the city’s industrial economy. Their contemporary objects offer new ways to think about who lived and worked in historic homes, whose labor made domestic life possible, and how architecture and objects can reveal changing ideas about status, work, and everyday life.
Exhibition Reception: October 15, 5–8 p.m., featuring RISD Furniture Design students and instructors. Free and open to the public; advance registration requested.
Admission: Pay what you wish. Advance tickets: preserveri.org/art-exhibition
