Even under the best of circumstances, moving is stressful. From packing up a lifetime of belongings into cardboard boxes and storage units to coordinating travel logistics, Gentry Moving & Storage’s services are tailored to meet each customer’s unique needs.

“In this business, you see a lot of emotion,” shares owner Christine Crum. “You have your first-time homebuyers, where the young family is so excited to get into that new house – the excitement is palpable. That move is like the dream move. Then there’s the ones that can be a little tough, where families are going through divorce, the death of a loved one, or moving a parent who is experiencing dementia or Alzheimer's.”

Founded by Christine as a small moving business with a single truck, Gentry is now a well-established and fully insured company, having since grown to include 25,000 square feet of short- and long-term storage, full packing and long-distance services, and the Seniors on the Move program. In their 17 years of unburdening families from some of the difficulties that come with relocating, Gentry is not only a woman-owned company in a male-dominated industry but was also the first in the region to identify and emphasize the challenges that come with moving for seniors.

“We were getting lots of phone calls from older adults who were feeling a bit overwhelmed by the moving process,” says Christine. “Oftentimes people who have lived in their homes for 40 or 50 years – homes full of memories – are overwhelmed trying to figure out how to break the house down and move into a smaller spot.”

This is where Gentry and their team of compassionate staff come in. With a background in education, Christine has fostered a culture of empathy and understanding among employees, which is reflected in the helpful voice you’ll hear on the other end of your call when deciding next steps for your move.

Through Seniors on the Move, a team of experts can help with decluttering and packing precious items, move-in assistance, and even spatial planning and furniture selection to make the most of a smaller footprint in a downsized home or assisted living apartment. This means retired couples can focus on their next big adventure or adult children can spend more valuable time with their parents rather than fussing over packing while Gentry staff handle the minutiae of the daunting transition.

It’s this level of dedication that Christine brings to the philanthropic work Gentry does for the community, too. People come first and are treated like family, with potluck dinners and breakfasts bringing together employees and charity work and fundraisers enhancing the lives of seniors.

“We kind of see the gamut of the cycle of life through this business in the way we help people,” says Christine. “Everyone has their individual wants or needs, and it’s important to be able to meet them there.”
