Black-owned businesses and restaurants have recently taken some well-deserved space in the spotlight, so we wanted to highlight these community staples and encourage you to discover, support, and uplift beyond just this week. While some are still transitioning from takeout to dine-in and others are awaiting a safe time to reopen, give these small businesses a follow on social media to stay up-to-date and learn how you can support them now and in the future. From comfort food and baked goods to creative farming and catering models, we’ve created categories for easy browsing. 

You may have spotted the Incred-A-Bowl food truck out and about pre-pandemic. Owner Russell Spellman and his wife Sterling have shifted to online ordering to satisfy all your spicy noodle and rice bowl needs, including vegan options. A relatively new food truck specializing in Dominican-inspired tacos, you can help keep Warren-based Cultrō afloat by ordering online or donating to see them back at your favorite summer spots in the future.

For Liberian fare in Federal Hill, Afrique D’Lounge recently reopened for limited indoor dining call 401-563-8265 to make reservations. Also in Federal Hill, family-owned Garden of Eve serves up Haitian cuisine with online ordering for pickup and delivery. Chef and owner Augusta Marsh-Socree serves authentic fare at Glorious West African Restaurant, available for orders online. Pan-a-Day Takeaway is your go-to for West Indian and Carribean fare with an American twist call 401-273-1506 to order (and read about owner Camilla Indira Baffoni here!). For Nigerian dishes to-go, order online from Village Restaurant in Pawtucket. Jamaican favorites can be found at Island House Restaurant or authentic patties from Ja Patty, a Pawtucket-based food truck.

Watch for updates to learn when places like Baker Street Cafe, Bangin Wings, Brooklyn Coffee Tea and Guest House, and Monte Cara Restaurant (serving authentic Cape Verdean cuisine) will reopen to the public, and inquire about gift card options to support them now. Phase 2 brings the reopening of indoor dining at spots like The District (Sunday Brunch is back, too!), and outdoor patio dining is now open at Troop, with reservations. Order hand pies from Black Beans PVD (celebrating six months this weekend!), a seafood boil for the whole family from Bucktown, wings from D’s Spot, comfort eats from Food for the Soul, or elegant entrees from Graceful Taste. For creative, fast-casual sandwiches, you can’t go wrong ordering takeout from Fork’n Sammich in East Providence. Humming Bird, in Newport, sources ingredients from farmers markets to bring you fresh dishes to-go.

For specialty cakes, sweet treats, and baked goods, reach out to Crystal Sparkman of Bake Eat Love Bakery, Cakes by Eboni (by appointment or preorder), Cupcakes by Ky, Maxine Baked, Warren-based Morabeza, Sweets by Nicky, Swiftley Sweets, or Syroya’s Sweetsations. Rose Mary’s Pralines are a must if you have a sweet tooth for this southern delicacy, and they’re available to order online for delivery. A dessert and brunch food truck, Sarcastic Sweets currently offers tasty gift packages and plenty of baked goods to order online.

BĀS, a cocktail service, is teaming up with Berri today to donate all proceeds to the George Floyd Memorial Fund, but keep them in mind for your cocktail cravings and follow them on social media to see where they’ll be popping up. Bring the bar experience outside with patio dining now open at Ten Rocks Tapas Bar and 148 Bar and Lounge (don’t miss Soul Food Thursdays). White Dog Distilling, a small-batch craft distiller in Pawtucket, offers curbside bottle, cocktail, and sanitizer orders and this weekend only, they’re partnering with Whisk Me Away to bundle donuts and booze.

For vegan eats, Bree Smith, the food alchemist behind The Afro-Indigenous Vegan, serves up all plant-based meals (sold out this week but check back later to preorder for next week); The Glow Cafe specializes in vegan smoothies, bowls, and juices; and try plant-based health products and smoothies from Mindful Maia (with their food truck reopening for catering in July). The Black Leaf Tea and Culture specializes in loose leaf tea and community building events celebrating Black culture. 

Consider Distinguish Catering for future parties, but in the meantime, try out their specialty sauces available for online ordering! You can support Four/29 Brunch and Supper Club, a catering company and pop-up at the Point Tavern, by purchasing a gift card to spend later.
