We Were There: SSV Oliver Hazard Perry

Stepping aboard the historic tall ship

Posted

Looking over historic illustrations of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, there is a striking resemblance to George Clooney. Just Kidding. I'm not sure what the acclaimed naval hero looked like. However, the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is the George Clooney of Tall Ships in my opinion, as it is one handsome vessel.

Last night I was lucky enough to climb aboard the OHP for their Marine Industry Night, sponsored by Bank Newport and Diego's. There could not have been a better venue for an event of that type, and The OHP crew did a fabulous job playing both bartender and tour guide. Guests were able to stroll about the entire length of the ship while a local band played folk music in the background. Cue any James Taylor song, ever. I left my metallic pink Sperry's at home, but I know now that it's possible to boat in heels as long as you hold onto something and only have one glass of chardonnay.

Of the many events that the OHP will be hosting this spring and summer, their Homeport of Rhode Island Gala looks especially exciting. This is being held to celebrate the completion of six years of planning and construction to the ship, an unprecedented $16 million (!) economic development project that has helped to support hundreds of jobs in RI, as well as the start of their Sailing Education mission. The gala will include a live and silent auction, cocktails, dinner, dancing and dessert. Naturally, SSV OHP will be dockside and open for visits during the gala. Visit their website or follow them on facebook for more information on upcoming events.
