There’s much to love in the touring production of Back to the Future, running through Sunday, June 15, at the Providence Performing Arts Center. The Olivier *UK) Award-winning musical features high-energy acting, upbeat music, impressive technical wizardry, and lots of laughs, all behind a flawless story, albeit quite familiar to anyone who’s seen the celebrated 1985 film.
As far as the plot, if you’ve seen the movie, you know the play. Marty McFly, the aimless, but lovable teenager in his down vest, accidentally travels back to 1955 and soon embarks on a mission to bring his parents together. He meets up with his mad scientist pal Doc Brown, his future parents, and various other characters, and hijinks ensue. Both Lucas Hallauer, who plays Marty, and David Josefsberg, who plays Doc Brown, are excellent, bringing just the right vibe to their respective characters.
It’s a wild ride, no doubt, and there’s nothing wrong with knowing the ending at the beginning, which I feared might dampen the experience. But, behind some great tunes, a lot of humor, and an occasional wink and nod (cause you know the story), the narrative is fresh and entertaining. Plus, it’s always a good day to see the writer punch out the bully.
Most of the songs are new in the Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard production, written specifically for the show. Familiar tunes like “Earth Angel,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and “Back in Time,” are also there, and get the largest applause. The visual effects are state-of-the-art, and well-choreographed throughout the show.
The musical works well for longtime fans and the next generation of Back to the Future devotees. It’s an entertaining, family-friendly production that will put a smile on your face. Your kids will love it too; there’s more than enough excitement and humor to keep everyone happy. Click here for tickets to the remaining shows.
