Providence Artist Carves a Niche with Hand-Painted Signs

Next time you walk into your favorite local business, take a look at their signage. There’s a good chance it was handcrafted by Jayson Salvi, a Providence-based sign painter. Working from his in-home studio, Salvi has created signs for businesses all over the state. Notable clients include Rooftop at the Providence G, Rogue Island, and Green Line Apothecary.

“I was always pretty artistic,” says Salvi, who mentions taking art classes in high school, “but I didn’t even know sign painting was a thing.” During his eight years in the Navy, Salvi volunteered for a variety of art projects, honing his skills; once back to civilian life, he founded Jayson Salvi Hand Painted Signs.

In addition to the actual painting of the signs, Salvi enjoys working with fellow small business owners, knowing what he helps to create is often a customer’s first impression. “A sign is an extension of your personality,” he says. In addition to business-specific work, Salvi sells old skateboards repurposed into signs. “During the pandemic I kept busy. People were still in business so I did a lot of individual signs,” says Salvi, noting that 2020 was one of his best years so far in a 15 year career.

“When a client sees the reality of ‘this is for my business’ and gives a handshake or a smile, it makes my day,” says Salvi. When asked to name a favorite sign, he pauses. “They are all so different.
