SO SUMMER

East Greenwich

City chic meets South County charm

Posted

The northernmost town in what is generally considered South County, East Greenwich is also the least “beachy” of its waterfront communities. its charming Main Street, however, is probably the closest thing you’ll find in the area to a dense cluster of urban activity. its location on Greenwich Cove, with several dockside restaurants, also makes east Greenwich a popular place for boaters.

Up until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1775 General assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but east Greenwich’s is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.
