Dazzle Mom With The Wonders of the Wurlitzer at PPAC

A special Mother’s Day performance is sure to delight guests of all ages

What has five keyboards, 21 ranks of pipes, and can emit dozens of orchestral sounds and whimsical sound effects? The one and only Mighty Wurlitzer, of course! Housed at the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), this beast of an organ was built in 1927 and today is the centerpiece of a beloved free mid-day concert series known as The Wonders of the Wurlitzer, providing guests with a one-of-a-kind lunch break.

The instrument, which is a sight to behold with its gilded ornamentation and many rows of keys, comes to life when world-renowned organist and silent film accompanist Peter Edwin Krasinski is seated at its helm. PPAC’s House Organist since the fall of 2020, Krasinski awed spectators with the Wurlitzer during the special 90th Anniversary Celebration in October 2018 and has since performed for the free concert series and at other PPAC events.

From virtual concerts during COVID – which dazzled at-home listeners with Krasinski’s improvised accompaniment to the 1925 silent film The Phantom of The Opera – to the Wonders of the Wurlitzer series (originally founded by previous House Organist, Lincoln W.N. Pratt, as free Wednesdays at the Wurlitzer), the prized organ has become an integral part of the PPAC experience since it was acquired in 1982.

The next chance to see the Mighty Wurlitzer in action is the Mamma! Mamma! PPAC Celebrates Mother’s Day event, on Wednesday, May 7, at 12pm. Whether you’re a longtime fan or seeking a truly unique way to show your appreciation for the moms and motherly figures in your life, this performance by Krasinski, which includes opportunities to make requests, is sure to wow all ages.

This free event is open to the public, with no tickets required, and attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch. Complimentary beverages will be available. Learn more at PPACri.org/WOW.
