As the state’s largest recreational area (14,000 acres), Arcadia Management Area features plenty of trails, including the Ben Utter trail, a 3.4-mile hike that ends at a small waterfall, and the Breakheart Loop, a 6.3-mile trail that winds around a pond. 260 Arcadia Rd., Hope Valley. 401-539-2356, riparks.com

Burlingame State Campground’s 3,100 acres boast 755 campsites, 11 cabins and the Vin Gormley trail, an 8.5-mile loop running around a pond. The 230-acre John H. Chafee Nature Preserve features undeveloped stretches of shoreline, a seasonal seal population and a 2.5-mile hike that ends at a beach looking toward the Jamestown Bridge. Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown. 401-884-2010 (call Goddard Memorial Park office for info), riparks.com

Narragansett’s Fisherman’s Memorial Park provides recreation, tree-lined paths, fishing areas and campgrounds just minutes from several state beaches. 1101 Point Judith Rd. 401-789-8374, riparks.com

Nestled among 50 acres of towering pines, Whispering Pines Campground offers a true outdoor experience, but still boasts plenty of amenities like recreational activities, fishing, an on-site store and the always-precious hot showers. 41 Saw Mill Rd., Hope Valley. 401-539-7011, whisperingpinescamping.com

For the truly ambitious, the 77-mile North-South Trail starts at the Atlantic Ocean in southernmost Westerly and runs the entire length of the state to the Massachusetts border, passing through eight state wildlife management areas along the way. rigreenways.org
