Weekend Best Bets

The weekend is here, and on this particular weekend your best bet is to spend Sunday showering your mother with affection and/or gifts. We've got a couple of suggestions for mom, and some for you too.

Temple Downtown leads things off with a jazz brunch featuring the music of Nat King Cole. Over at the Marriott Downtown, mom can receive an autographed cookbook from "TV Maitre'd" Joe Zito with a donation to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation — and of course she'll be well fed too. If a more traditional brunch is your thing, Aspire's got you covered. If you'd prefer to take mom out to a show, we're sure she'll enjoy Festival Ballet's Swan Lake at PPAC.

Now that mom is well fed and happy, we can move on to your plans. Celtic punk legends Flogging Molly come to Lupo's on Friday night if you're looking for a rowdy good time. For music that's a little more mellow, look to Chanteuse, which puts the spotlight on female singers and songwriters, at Fete. If you'd rather laugh than dance, check out the Knockdown Stand-Up comedy showcase at the Spot Underground.

Finally, take the weekend to stimulate the local economy a little. The last Wintertime Farmer's Market of the season is at the Hope Artiste Village on Saturday. Starting the following Saturday, May 19, it moves back outdoors to Hope Street's Lippitt Park. The very good cause Recycle-a-Bike is having the second weekend of its fundraiser sale, where you can get good bikes cheap, or just talk shop and enjoy a smoothie.
