Now that all the flowers and chocolates and candy hearts are but a distant memory (of Tuesday), we can all move on with our social lives and get ready for the weekend. There are plenty of good options, too.

The Providence Children's Film Festival began Thursday night and continues through Tuesday. There will be film screenings and workshops at the RISD Auditorium, RISD Chace Center and Cable Car Cinema to keep you and the kids busy all weekend.

Trinity Rep has been winning over critics and audiences with its new interpretation of Shakespeare's controversial classic The Merchant of Venice. It continues this weekend and runs through March 4.

Everybody's favorite local street band is celebrating a birthday on Saturday night, as the Extraordinary Rendition Band Turns 3 at the Roots Cafe. DJ Reza Wreckage, Baby Oil, Kickin' Brass and the Big Nazo puppets will help them celebrate.

For homeowners, potential homeowners and hardcore fans of HGTV, the Northern Rhode Island Home Show returns to Twin River for its fourth year. The event runs Saturday and Sunday.

Fete, Olneyville's glittering new music venue, rocks hard on Friday night with another installment of its General Assembly local music series. This one features Ghost Thrower and I Hate Our Freedom with special guests She Rides and All Eyes West.

A great reason to take a ride out to Bristol is For the Love of Jazz and Chocolate. This evening of wine, chocolate and love songs, featuring jazz vocalist Michelle Cruz, is at the beautiful waterfront Blithewold Mansion.

Finally, head south for the winter, as the annual Newport Winter Festival kicks off on Friday. It's 10 days of events in locations around the City by the Sea, from a comedy show to a children's fair to a chili cookoff.
