Imago Foundation for the Arts (IFA) will feature artwork by IFA artist Eileen Siobhan Collins and guest artists Nora Lewis and Tim Ian Mitchell as part of a group exhibit May 3 through June 10 at IMAGO Gallery, 36 Market Street, Warren. The public is invited to a free reception on Friday, May 4 from 6 – 8 p.m.

Collins is a painter, mixed media artist and founding IFA member who lives and works in Warren. Her artwork is process driven and reveals its meaning through the physical act of painting and her interest in the psychology of relationships. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island College and is co-founder of Pastiche Fine Desserts in Providence, RI.

For this exhibit, Collins has created a series of mixed media collages and artworks on paper titled, “Quinta Essentia,” a Latin phrase denoting a fifth substance believed to exist in addition to the four elements: air, earth, fire, and water. Medieval philosophers believed that this “fifth essence” was the substance celestial bodies were made from and was present in all things. She says, “My work is an exploration of this intangible quality revealed through spatial and color relationships that emerge through painting and mark-making.”

IFA will host a “Chat with Eileen” in the gallery at 7 p.m., May 17 when Collins will be available to discuss the influences that drive her creative practice. All are welcome to attend.

Lewis is an award-winning photographer who has exhibited her work in both galleries and museums throughout New England and beyond. Currently, she is the staff photographer at the University of Rhode Island. Lewis is interested in art therapy and the healing power of the image. She says, “Everyone has a story to tell. Mine is told through photographs. Each image is an adventure. Often, the adventure is about transition and transformation. Sometimes it signals change on the horizon or provides healing of the past. Sometimes it is simply about beauty. Above all, it is an attempt to connect with my subject, whether it be myself, another, or nature, and then ultimately, with the viewer. It’s about all of our stories, so unique and universal at the same time.”

Mitchell is a full-time artist practicing primarily in ceramic materials. In recent years, he has made sculpture and vessels finished in wood-fired kilns with fellow artists Chris Gustin and Tim Rowan. He also takes influence from travel and has worked as an Artist in Residence in the United States, France, Denmark and most recently in Italy. He has a studio is in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston, where he has lived and worked as an architect for most of his professional career. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the College of Art, Architecture and Planning at Cornell University.

His artwork for this exhibit, “CAN WE TALK?” is a contemporary and playful attempt to cope with a confusing tendency in public communication to obfuscate. He says, “By being attributed speaking characteristics, sculpture can help to clarify the human condition.”

Other IMAGO artists who will participate in the exhibit include Mary Dondero, Betty Harrington, Carl Keitner, Pascale Lord, Yolanda Mazzoni, Linda Megathlin, Rina Naik, Kol Naylor, Mercedes Nuñez, Anne Marie Rossi, Lenny Rumpler, Howard Rotblat-Walker and Howard Windham.
