The West Side Gets Medieval

Celebrate Halloween with gremlins, goblins and Middle Age weaponry

What's that contraption in the photo, you ask? Why, that's a trebuchet, or a Medieval-style catapult. And what's it doing in the park? Well, it's there to help residents, friends and visitors to Providence's West Side celebrate Halloween the best way they know how: by launching pumpkins across the park in a smashing spectacle.

The West Broadway Neighborhood Association hosts its fifth annual Gremlins & Goblins Halloween Party & Parade on Saturday, October 27 from 1-4pm. This family friendly event will bring the whole neighborhood and visitors from all over the city out to the Dexter Training Ground (aka the Armory Park between Dexter and Parade Streets) to one of Providence's most unique Halloween events. Kids will enjoy the parade of gremlins, goblins and other creepy creatures, a cardboard haunted house sponsored by Wild Child Cooperative and a “Make-Your-Own Candy Apple Bar” sponsored by Hudson Street Deli. Meanwhile, adults can enjoy some Oktoberfest cheer in the beer garden along with Celtic and folk music by Lindsay Adler. Youth Pride, Inc. will also be hosting a food drive to benefit their RI Community Food Bank sponsored pantry; just donate a canned good and be entered into a raffle to win local art, gift certificates and more. Oh, and then there's Heritage Restoration's trebuchet. Donate $5 to launch a pumpkin Medieval style, or bring your own pumpkin for only $2. Either way the result is a smashing good time.
