The Weekend Rundown: June 16-18

Posted

June 16: The RISD Museum’s annual dance party is back. Luminous, held in partnership with The Dean Hotel, will light up the night with cocktails, snacks, two DJs and some seriously cool balloon art installations by Float.

June 16: Enjoy jewels, fashion, and cocktails – and all in support of children and families – at Fort Adams in Newport for Au Courant, Child & Family’s annual benefit. The event raises money for the organization’s vital programs that benefit kids, elders and everyone in between, and will feature a fashion show of Northeast designers, tasty catered food, and silent and live auctions. Support a fabulous cause and hobnob with Derek Warburton, Beyoncé’s stylist, who will be showing off his jewelry line.

June 16-18: The Block Island Music Festival at Captain Nick’s Rock ‘n Roll Bar is back for another rocking week. The “musical gumbo” brings together talented local artists like Niki Luparelli & the Golddiggers, The Little Compton Band and WBRU Rock Hunt winners VulGarrity.

June 17: Rhode Island PrideFest marks its 41st anniversary this year with events starting at noon in Providence. Head to South Water Street to celebrate our LGBTQ community with two stages of live music and drag shows during the day, then stick around for New England’s only Illuminated Night parade and other events all over downtown.

June 17: Work towards going green by attending the Greening the Sphere Community Festival, where participants will learn about maintaining our environment and making the world a bit more eco-friendly. This festival will include performances, children’s activities, interactive workshops and tips for living a greener life. Greening the Sphere is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to make the world a more sustainable place for everyone.

June 17: The Bacon and Beer Festival, a new event from the Beervana crew, is popping off at the Steel Yard. Twenty-five local restaurants – like Durk’s Bar-B-Q, Julians and New Rivers – are pairing their best bacon-inspired dishes with 25 brews from Rhode Island and beyond. Finally, two underappreciated food items are getting their day in the sun.

June 17:
At Summer Pops 2017, The Chorus of Westerly gives you all of the indoor entertainment you could want, but outside. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets to this beloved annual concert, when the Pops Festival Orchestra joins The Chorus of Westerly for an outdoor concert in Westerly’s Wilcox Park, followed by fireworks.

June 17: Smith’s Castle isn’t really a castle - but it is one of the oldest buildings in Rhode Island and has played an important role in the state’s history. Celebrate the North Kingstown landmark with their annual Strawberry Festival, featuring family-friendly entertainment, costumed historical interpreters and, you guessed it, lots of strawberry shortcake.
