The Weekend Rundown: December 1-3

December 1-2: Mayor Elorza kicks off the holiday season with the Providence 2017 Holiday Celebration and Christmas Tree Lighting. The two-night festival features a tree lighting at City Hall and one at The Providence Rink, plus world champion figure skating demonstrations, live performances and an artists’ marketplace.

December 1-3: Take a break from all-holiday-everything to see Evil Dead: The Musical at Rhode Island College, a musical theatre version of the campy ‘80s horror movie wherein five college students find themselves at an abandoned cabin in the woods with supernatural forces.

December 2: Walk on the wild side at the Roger Williams Park Zoo Winter Festival, happening at the carousel in the park. There will be a visit from Santa, fun kids’ activities and more.


December 2: Make the holidays sweet at the 13th annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest at Artists’ Exchange in Cranston. The festive afternoon includes free face painting, holiday photo sessions and artisan craft sales.

December 2-3: Celebrate the old fashioned way at Christmas at Spell Hall, a yuletide celebration at the Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry, when the 1770 home will be decked for the holidays and offering treats and entertainment.

December 3: Celebrate Nikommo Thanksgiving at the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter. The winter moon celebration continues the ancestral Native tradition of giving by collecting donations for the Narragansett Indian Tribe Social Services Department, and features storytelling, music and dance, plus a Native American marketplace.

December 3: Get your holiday shopping done while you treat yourself when Field of Artisans sets up their eclectic marketplace in the tasting room of Whalers Brewing in South Kingtown.

December 3: The Hope Street Holiday Stroll will feature local musicians, street performers, tons of food trucks and an appearance by characters from Festival Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

December 3: Strap on your racing Santa hat for the Downtown Jingle 5K, a road race through the streets of downtown Providence that raises money for Toys for Tots and Project Undercover.
