The Hottest Meat in Town

Sampling the city's best hot dogs

Posted

Don’t be mad. We can’t help pointing out all the humor opportunities involved in our hot dog variety taste test. It’s meat in buns people! All jokes aside, there’s a reason people come back time and time again for these salty, savory, porky or beefy mouthfuls. Whether your preference is enjoying these meaty treats one at a time or double-fisting your way through handful after handful, the truth is plain and simple: there’s plenty of meat to go around.

Going All the Way

Who can seriously come to Rhode Island and not try hot wieners all-the-way from Olneyville N.Y. System? Although they are mostly reserved for the late night crowd, these hand cut links always have just the right ratio of meat sauce, mustard, onions and celery seed in the warmed and steamed bun. All we needed was some coffee milk to wash it all down. 18 Plainfield Street. 621-9500.

The Best Kind of Wurst

If you’ve never had a gourmet house-made sausage it’s time to head over to the Wurst Kitchen at Chez Pascal. The wurst we tried was plentifully topped with the house mustard that had a slight sweetness to it, sweet pepper relish and house relish all nestled in a perfectly grilled bun. The savory and well-seasoned pork sausage was encased in a natural casing that had that just the right snap to it once you bit into it. And you know what they say, once you go snap you’ll never go back. 960 Hope Street. 421-4422.

Let’s Be Frank

The 100% all-natural beef franks from Spike’s Junkyard Dogs hit the spot, especially since they were served on a soft and pillowy French roll. We tasted the Texas Ranger, which was teeming with barbecue sauce, bacon and cheddar cheese. Just one of these dogs was enough to satisfy even the biggest of appetites. 640 Reservoir Avenue, Cranston. 781-7556.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

You may not expect a tasty jumbo hot dog from a well-known burger joint but that is just what you get at Harry’s Bar & Burger. Their Coney Island Dog is extra-long, juicy and topped with caramelized onions, sweet relish and grilled up just right. So, the next time you stop in to Harry’s, give the hot dogs a second look; it’ll be love at first bite. 121 North Main Street. 228-7437.
