The Great Cat Heist

A California fashion line proves that imitation isn’t the sincerest form of flattery

Posted

Providence fashion designer Joseph Aaron Segal has made a name for himself locally, showing his Pretty Snake by JAS line at StyleWeek, in downtown boutiques and in the pages of Providence Monthly, to name a few. He’s getting a different kind of recognition right now, though: a Pretty Snake design has shown up as an “original” work on the website of California-based LF Laguna clothing. Joe’s signature cat sweater doesn’t just inspire the design – it’s nearly identical: the same style sweater, fabric, fit and color (right down to the yellow cats’ eyes embellishments). The company’s website says that LF Laguna has “consistently been a leader in developing [and] unearthing fashion treasures.” Apparently, by stealing the original works of emerging designers. It’s nice to see PVD people rallying against the company – in fact, the Facebooks have blown up with this story so significantly today that the sweater is already down from the company’s website. We say go ahead and use the Pretty Snake design: just, you know, pay the designer for it.
