After launching a successful Kickstarter campaign for a new, state of the art digital projection system – tentatively slated for installation in mid-June – the Cable Car Cinema and Café is ready for its bittersweet final film screening. Fittingly enough, the noisy old gizmo is going out with 1971’s The Last Picture Show.
“It just made sense to me,” says owner Daniel Julius Kamil. “The dying town as medium for a dying medium, I couldn’t think of anything better.”
The Last Picture Show begins on Friday, May 17, with a special day of screenings exclusively for Kickstarter backers on Sunday, May 19 – complete with pulled pork sandwiches to compliment the film’s West Texas setting. “It was important for us to really honor the people who gave us money," says Kamil. "This is really like a give-back to the community, honoring them for taking the risk with us.”
