Mid-July is the sweet spot (literally) for harvesting berries of all varieties. With plenty of strawberries still on the vine and blueberries reaching peak season this week, now is the time to get your picking in. Many local farms offer a pick-your-own (PYO) model to let you venture into the fields for a more authentic and socially distanced experience of collecting summer berries, perfect for sweet bevvies, desserts, and snacking. Check with your local farms online or over the phone to learn about their health safety policies, and head over while they’re still ripe!
Starting July 8, blueberry picking will be available at Dame Farm and Orchard in Johnston. Bring your own clippers to take home a mason jar of flower clippings while you’re there. In the same town, make an appointment to visit Salisbury Farm to catch the tail-end of strawberry season. Meanwhile, PYO blueberry season is already in full swing at Goodwin Brothers Farm Stand in North Smithfield, open daily from 9am-4pm. Both raspberries and blueberries are ripe for the picking at Harmony Farms in North Scituate, where you’re welcome to bring your own container or use theirs to carry your prize.
Find strawberry picking fields in the midst of harvesting season at Quonset View Farm in Portsmouth from 8am-6pm. Satisfy your raspberry cravings at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, with picking offered daily and plenty of summer produce in their market, too. Just over the state border in Seekonk, visit Four Town Farm’s Facebook page for updates before venturing over to their fields for strawberries fresh from the vine. Also there, find Osamequin Farm, a farming co-op project that opens their fields to the community for berry picking and is nearing their grand reopening for 2020 (updates posted on social media and in their newsletter).
For South County blueberry spots, Pinecrest Farm in Richmond will open their fields for picking on July 10 with prepaid containers at entry and other new procedures in place. Pickers will be welcome at Rocky Point Farm in Warwick beginning Monday, July 13, and Smith’s Berry Farm in Saunderstown anticipates opening this week, as soon as the goods are ripe – you can follow on Facebook to track their progress.
