Luxe Burger Bar will open its doors to the Rhode Island Blood Center on Wednesday, November 13th to host a blood drive to honor founder John Elkhay. Elkhay is battling a rare blood cancer which causes him to undergo multiple blood transfusions per month, and knows first-hand the importance of blood donation.
The blood being collected is not for Elkhay, but will go to those in need through the Rhode Island Blood Center. All participants who are present to donate will receive a gift certificate for a ‘Build Your Own Burger’ and a Blood Orange Margarita for use at a return visit. Those who cannot attend the drive but donate blood at the Rhode Island Blood Center will also receive a gift certificate for use at Luxe Burger Bar when they mention code 3944.
John Elkhay has been a driving force behind Rhode Island’s thriving culinary scene for more nearly 40 years. Known as the ‘Maestro’ of Chow Fun Food Group, he has been responsible for creating some of the most well-known and iconic restaurants in Rhode Island including 10 Prime Steak & Sushi, XO Café, Luxe Burger Bar, Harry’s Bar & Burger, and Xaco Taco to name a few.
As an SBA businessman of the year and a past chairman of the RI Hospitality Association, Elkhay has been a cornerstone of the community and deeply involved with many local non-profits.
He was recently diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and will continue to need multiple blood transfusions as he awaits a bone marrow treatment. This drive is his way of giving back to the community and to replace some of the blood he requires.
