Let Them Eat Cake

Sampling sweet treats from all over the city

Posted

We’re adults. If we want to stuff our faces full of cake, we can do so. In fact, if we want cake for dinner, that option is clearly on the table too. There are a plethora of designer bakeries in and around Providence. So, in the spirit of pure giving (because we do this for you), we tasted cakes of all shapes, sizes, textures and flavors. You can thank us later.

Devilishly Rich

They say that the devil is in the details. That couldn’t be more true of this three-layered cake from Sin bakery. The top two layers were a rich red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, while the bottom layer was a chocolate bourbon cake, which was incredibly moist and fudgy with a nice background flavor of bourbon. It was decadent and devilishly delicious. 200 Allens Avenue. 369-8427.

A Savory Surprise
“Absolutely gorgeous,” was the reaction of one of our staff members to the Ellie’s Bakery upside-down stone fruit and olive oil cake with rosemary cream cheese buttercream. This wedding-caliber cake was on the savory side, which was a pleasant surprise. We were enchanted by the heavenly aroma emanating from the figs, blueberries, blackberries, candied rosemary, the icing and the dense yet moist cake itself. 61 Washington Street. 228-8118.

Pretty in Pink
This adorable Pink Champagne cake from Sweet Indulgence made us think of our childhood and how it would be perfect for a princess party... at any age. While the outside was beautifully decorated in champagne but- tercream, it was not as sweet as you would imagine it would be. The in- side layers were perfectly pink and had a lovely strawberry scent. The filling in between the layers reminded us of whipped cream but was actually a strawberry mousse. 905 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. 228-7719.

A Textural Treat
Ever wonder what it would be like if lemon and coffee had a baby? Apparently so did North bakery. Their lemon cake was frosted with a lemon Swiss meringue butter cream that was topped with caramelized puffed rice crunchies – a nice textural surprise. Filling the space between the layers was coffee curd as well as more crunchies in one layer of the cake. “This was an unexpected yet pleasant combo,” remarked one of our staff members. Guess you’ll just have to try it for yourself. 70 Battey Street. 421-4062.
