NOTE RESCHEDULED EVENT DATE: On SEPTEMBER 26 at 6:00 p.m., enjoy the company of history enthusiasts at the 187th Birthday fundraising buffet honoring Governor William Sprague IV -- hosted by the Cranston Historical Society. Guests will be awed by some of the fascinating objects on display from the Sprague family collection. While you are here, view the first Cranston History Network signage dedicated this past spring by the City of Cranston, describing the history of the neighborhood (located inside the grounds at the corner of Cranston Street & Dyer Avenue).

William Sprague served as RI’s 27th Governor from 1860 to 1863; and as U.S. Senator 1863 to 1875. Sprague was a political leader who spoke to the conscience of the nation and RI, fighting for the abolition of slavery. He was born in Cranston on September 12, 1830 and died in Paris, September 11, 1915. On November 12, 1863, Sprague at age 33, married the daughter of Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase -- the beautiful and politically-minded Katherine Jane Chase, age 23. The Mansion is located in what was once called Spragueville (also known as Cranston Village), a federal style mansion (circa 1770/1864), standing as a tribute to Rhode Island’s textile history. Three generations of the Sprague family resided here. In 1808, it was from this house that the Sprague family established a calico cloth printing mill ~ the A&W Sprague Works (now Cranston Print Works).
