Concert Review: K.Flay, Warpaint and Joseph

Wednesday is a work night for most, but that didn’t stop indie rock fanatics from attending the WBRU Winter Warmer at Lupos Heartbreak Hotel on December 14 to benefit Girl’s Rock! RI. The night's lineup included Warpaint, K. Flay, and Joseph.

Girl’s Rock! RI is a volunteer-based nonprofit that uses music creation and critical thinking to foster empowerment, collaborative relationships and the development of healthy identities in girls and women. Girl’s Rock! RI envisions a world in which gender and identity are assets, not limitations, and where girls actively claim their own strengths and expertise to pursue goals of their own design.

The crowd passionately echoed the lyrics “burn the white flag” as Joseph – sisters Natalie Closner and twins Meegan and Allison –opened up. The crowd fed off of Natalie’s energy, replicating the band's dance moves.

Up next was K. Flay, whose exceptional voice and humble attitude was inspiring. Her rage was infectious, as the audience jumped to the beat and bobbed their heads to her performance of “Blood in the Cut.”

Warpaint appeared on stage and launched right into their performance. It was hard to know which song was the opener because the performance sounded like a long, unified song. As opposed to the other bands, Warpaint was more reserved in its interaction with the crowd, which didn’t seem to bother the audience one bit.

The message in their music was definitely moving. Although, K. Flay undoubtedly stole the show, all three performances were worth the time, energy and donation.
