Owner Devioune Mayim-Daviau notes that while her business is queer-owned and operated, people of any sexual orientation are more than welcome. Robert McAuslan has been managing the store for four years. “Mister Sister is a safe zone for all sexualities to come in and explore,” he says. “One of our first goals is customer service. We’re not trying to make anyone feel uncomfortable and we’re never trying to sell people anything. We’re really just here to help and to listen.”
Although it shouldn’t be the case, many people feel somewhat embarrassed upon entering an adult-only store. The employees at Mister Sister understand that and act accordingly. “We always make first contact,” McAuslan says, “and then based on the customer’s reaction to that, we’ll either continue the conversation or leave them alone to browse. Sometimes I’ll make a joke like, ‘How are ya’ll making out tonight?’ just to get people laughing. Normally they’ll smile and tell me what they need.”
McAuslan says that often times people will come in and say, ‘I have this problem.’ He’ll explain to the customer that it’s not a problem they have; it’s simply a situation. “I’ll educate them and give them options – tools to help them move it in a different direction. A lot of our customers come straight from the gynecologist. Maybe they’re post-menopausal and have trouble getting in the mood. Some people think my job must be wild but it’s sort of like working in a CVS!”
There’s something for everyone with items starting at just $1. “On the low end we have $1 lubricants, adult pop rocks – things that can make the night interesting without breaking the bank,” he explains. “We also pride ourselves on carrying the better quality items. We have toys that are medical grade, ABS plastic. If they’re safe to be in your body for a lifetime, then...”
McAuslan says that the shop also tries to stay true to its community ethics. “If we carry a product made for queer people, we make sure it’s made by a queer-owned company. Similarly we also try to look for products made by women. Community outreach is the final component in Mister Sister’s business model. “We have a rotating artists’ wall behind the counter and we donate faithfully to gay bingo.”
