It’s time to make Providence an instant city! Cornish Associates and In Downcity are excited to announce the arrival of the Providence Polaroid Project. The project was selected by the PopUp Providence Initiative to install a temporary Polaroid camera shop, instant film gallery, and participatory portrait studio in Downcity Providence.
The project will pop up at 235 Westminster St. from July 19 through August 22 and will remain free and open to the public. Offering free use of its extensive instant camera collection, Providence Polaroid Project aims to capture hundreds of unique images created by guests. Guests are encouraged to capture photographs of their friends, their city and themselves for instant development, display, and celebration on the gallery walls. Functioning as a participant driven exhibition, the gallery space is created by the community of Providence for the community of Providence.
Chosen as part of the city’s first “Tactical Urbanism” initiative, project creators Devan Durante and Brandon Lane are determined to celebrate the people, style and soul of Providence. Durante, the driving force behind Standard Film, emphasizes the importance of human process, visual aesthetic and tangible results through his work. Lane works with The MET School, Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and The Cool School as a teaching entrepreneur. Together, the duo will work side by side to make the Providence Polaroid Project an interactive celebration of the community.
